What is a Speech-Language Pathologist?
A speech-language pathologist is a professional that evaluates and treats children and adults who have challenges with speech and/or language.
What is the difference between speech and language?
Speech is referred to as articulation, or the production of speech sounds. An articulation disorder is when one is not able to form the correct speech sounds. Speech can be affected by the lack of muscle coordination and movements that are important when producing speech sounds.
Speech-Language Pathologists also help with language.
Language can be broken down into receptive and expressive language. Receptive language is that language someone understands, while expressive language is the ability to use language.
Children may have difficulty using words to communicate, forming sentences, or using a varied selection of vocabulary. Children may also also challenges in using language in an appropriate context.
